Haliburton’s home return is the occasion; Dallas’ Flagg and Irving make it a game. Watch Haliburton’s pass before watching the shot. Then follow Flagg’s route into the lane: is Indiana already in front of him, or trying to catch up? Those two details make the matchup easy to discuss without memorizing a box score.
Indiana’s home crowd gets Haliburton back after a lost season. Beside him, learn Siakam and center Zubac. Dallas’ names are Flagg and Irving, with Gafford worth finding near the rim.
For one Pacers possession, watch Zubac set a screen and ask who follows him after Haliburton uses it. For one Mavericks possession, watch whether Flagg attacks an already-moving defense or has to start the whole action himself.
FanFluent’s take: the best sign of a creator’s influence is sometimes a teammate receiving an easier opportunity. Keep an eye on the recipient of the pass, not just the passer.
Indiana gets its point guard back in front of the home crowd. Tyrese Haliburton missed last season after an Achilles tear; this is his first home appearance of the new campaign. Dallas has a returning creator too: Kyrie Irving.
The occasion belongs to Haliburton. The game still has to be played against a team with Cooper Flagg. Watch whether Indiana turns the crowd’s first burst into organized movement, or rushes the first available shot.
Haliburton and Pascal Siakam are the Pacers to learn first; Cooper Flagg and Kyrie Irving are the Dallas pair. Ivica Zubac is Indiana’s center, while Daniel Gafford is an interior option for Dallas.
Follow Haliburton’s eyes before his pass. With Irving, watch the dribble’s pace and direction. With Flagg, follow the whole drive: where he receives the ball, how he enters the lane, and whether the defender meets him squarely or reaches from the side.
Flagg made 11 of 13 free throws in Dallas’ opening loss. That makes the whistle worth understanding. A defender who gets into position early can challenge a drive differently from one chasing it. Count which situation Indiana creates, rather than treating every foul as the same mistake.
Haliburton’s return also changes what to look for around Siakam: does his catch arrive before the defense settles? A pass that saves a teammate a difficult dribble can be valuable even when it is not an assist.
Watch the interaction between Haliburton and Zubac. When Zubac sets a screen—a stationary obstacle for the defender—check both the ball and the space behind it. If two Mavericks move toward Haliburton, someone else has to account for the center.
At the other end, see whether Irving and Flagg attack in sequence or take turns from a standing start. The first action can create an opening for the second player. That is a useful distinction even if the shot misses.
Indiana coach Rick Carlisle led Dallas to the 2011 championship. The coaching connection gives this matchup another layer beyond the two returning guards.
Try watching the first possession after a timeout. Does a player receive the ball somewhere new? Does a screen arrive earlier? You do not need to identify the play’s name to notice that a coach has changed the starting picture.
FanFluent’s take: enjoy Haliburton’s reception, then watch the teammates who benefit from his return. Siakam and Zubac give you two different places to look—one moving into a catch, the other working near the basket.
For Dallas, Flagg does not have to produce a spectacular finish for a drive to matter. If he makes an extra defender move and finds a teammate, the possession has created a second chance to attack. Judge that decision separately from whether the next shot falls.
Conversation prompt: “Did the pass create the opening, or did the teammate move before the pass?” Watch one Haliburton possession together and decide.
