Atlanta forced 25 turnovers in Friday’s record 47-point win. Houston escaped San Antonio behind Amen Thompson’s late block. Watch Dyson Daniels pressure the Rockets’ passing and Sengun find a clean outlet. VanVleet is expected to rest, per the NBA preview; official game-day reports were still pending in the reviewed morning snapshot. They meet again Monday.
Atlanta welcomes Houston after a franchise-record 47-point win, fueled by 17 steals and 25 forced turnovers. Daniels has 12 steals in two games; Johnson contributes points, rebounds and assists. Houston’s Friday was closer: Sengun scored 29, and Thompson’s late block helped preserve a 114-110 win over San Antonio.
The watch point is Houston’s passing under pressure, especially with VanVleet scheduled to rest according to the NBA preview. Follow the teammates moving around Sengun: do they offer clean outlets before Atlanta can crowd him? The official morning injury submissions remained pending. Remember what you see—the teams play again Monday in Houston.
Atlanta turned Charlotte’s possessions into a highlight reel Friday: 25 forced turnovers, 17 steals and a 47-point win. Houston survived a much tighter finish, with Amen Thompson blocking Victor Wembanyama’s late attempt. Now the Hawks’ appetite for the ball meets a Rockets team that just needed one extraordinary defensive play to escape.
Dyson Daniels is Atlanta’s name to remember when a pass looks safe: he has 12 steals through two games. Jalen Johnson contributes across the floor, averaging 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and seven assists so far. Houston counters with Alperen Sengun, who scored 29 Friday, plus Kevin Durant and Thompson, who each added 20.
Houston’s ball-handling deserves extra attention. The NBA preview reports that Fred VanVleet is scheduled to rest after playing 31 minutes Friday, following his return from right ACL surgery. That makes the first pass into the offense a useful viewing point: who gets Houston organized before Atlanta can turn pressure into a scramble?
When Sengun receives the ball, look away from him for a moment. Are Houston’s other players moving into clear passing lanes, or asking him to thread the ball through Daniels and company? Against this Atlanta roster, a careful entry pass and a well-timed cut may matter as much as the eventual shot.
Atlanta’s 47-point margin Friday was a franchise record. It is an excellent conversation starter and a poor reason to expect another rout. Houston offers a different test: can the Hawks make disciplined possessions uncomfortable, rather than relying on a repeat of Charlotte’s giveaways?
Our take: watch the possessions in which nothing spectacular happens. Atlanta’s steals are obvious; a Houston possession that ends with a clean shot and no loose pass is quieter but useful evidence. The Hawks are chasing 3-0, and making a different kind of opponent uncomfortable would give that start more substance.
These teams meet again Monday in Houston. Bring this question: “What would each coach change after seeing this once?” Tonight can give you a specific answer to check in the rematch. VanVleet’s planned rest is reported separately; both teams’ official game-day injury submissions were still pending in the NBA morning snapshot.
