Dallas returns home after beating Indiana, but the NBA preview reports Cooper Flagg will miss tonight with left shoulder soreness. Follow Kyrie Irving against the space Victor Wembanyama can close, and watch P.J. Washington’s involvement. San Antonio is 0-2; both teams played Friday. The remaining game-day availability reports were pending in the reviewed morning snapshot.
Dallas earned Dusty May’s first NBA coaching win Friday, 121-105 at Indiana, but lost Cooper Flagg to left shoulder soreness. The NBA preview reports Flagg will miss the home opener. Irving scored 24; Washington added 20 points and 13 rebounds.
San Antonio brings an 0-2 record and a Wembanyama bounce-back: 25 points and 13 rebounds against Houston after a 1-for-13 opener. Watch Irving enter the lane and see whether Wembanyama’s attention opens space for another Maverick. Both teams played Friday; their official game-day reports were still pending in the reviewed morning snapshot.
Dallas finally has a win to bring home, but its home opener comes with a missing centerpiece. Cooper Flagg left Friday’s victory in Indiana with left shoulder soreness; the NBA matchup preview reports he will miss tonight. Opposite him is a San Antonio team still seeking its first win. The Texas matchup has changed before the opening tip.
Kyrie Irving scored 24 in Dallas’s win; Victor Wembanyama answered his own rough opener with 25 points and 13 rebounds against Houston. Irving gives you a ball-handler to follow, Wembanyama a giant near the basket. Add Dallas’s P.J. Washington to your list: he contributed 20 points and 13 rebounds Friday.
San Antonio lost 114-110 to Houston despite Wembanyama’s improved night. His opener had included 1-for-13 shooting. That is why tonight is more interesting than a quick glance at 0-2: one star’s rebound has not yet become a team win. Both clubs are playing for the second consecutive night.
Watch what happens after Irving gets inside the three-point line. If Wembanyama moves toward him, does Dallas find Washington or another teammate in the space he leaves? If Wembanyama stays near the basket, can Irving create a comfortable shot before reaching him? Those two pictures make the matchup readable without memorizing a playbook.
Friday was Dusty May’s first victory as an NBA head coach. Dallas hired him from Michigan after a national championship. His next assignment is immediately different: follow a road breakthrough with a home opener while adjusting to Flagg’s absence. A first win does not buy much time to celebrate on this schedule.
Our take: Washington is a good place to look for Dallas’s response. His 20-point, 13-rebound night helped build a victory that once featured a 37-point first-half lead. Watch whether he gets involved early through rebounds, cuts or passes, rather than waiting for Irving to manufacture every opening.
Try: “How does Dallas keep everyone involved when its young centerpiece is unavailable?” Flagg’s absence is reported by the NBA preview; the league’s morning game-day reports for both teams were still pending. Do not turn that reporting gap into an assumption that every other player is cleared. The question is about Dallas’s adjustment, not a prediction of its starting five.
