Kessler returns to Utah as a Laker; former Laker Hayes now plays for the Jazz. Follow Kessler’s path to the rim after screening for Doncic and Hayes’s impact in his minutes. Kessler just had six blocks against the Clippers and is listed available despite a finger splint. Utah’s Jackson comes off 24 points and 10 rebounds.
This reunion runs both ways: Kessler is back in Utah with the Lakers, while Hayes faces his former Los Angeles teammates. Kessler had 22 points and six blocks Friday; Hayes scored 17 off Utah’s bench. Jackson added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Jazz.
Watch Utah’s choice when Kessler screens for Doncic: stay with the ball, or protect the basket? Then watch the Jazz after halftime, when turnovers and fouls nearly cost them Friday’s win. Kessler is available with a finger splint in the reviewed report; Nurkic is out for Utah.
Walker Kessler returns to Utah wearing Lakers colors. Across the floor is Jaxson Hayes, who spent the previous three seasons in Los Angeles. Both centers have something recent to show their former teams, which makes this reunion more useful than a nostalgia reel: watch how each helps his new teammates find room around the basket.
Kessler supplied 22 points, six blocks and three steals against the Clippers on Friday. Utah’s Jaren Jackson Jr. answered New Orleans with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are the Lakers’ guards to follow before a Kessler finish; Jackson is the Jazz big man to track at both ends.
Hayes started Utah’s opener, then came off the bench Friday and scored 17 on 7-for-8 shooting in a one-point win. A different role did not mean a smaller impact. When he enters tonight, notice whether Utah gets a quicker path to the rim or a different defensive look from the Lakers.
When Kessler sets a screen for Doncic, follow Kessler toward the basket. Does Utah stay with Doncic and concede a pass inside, or send help that leaves someone else open? On the other end, watch for a Jazz driver who turns away from Kessler. A shot never attempted can be as revealing as one he blocks.
Kessler played only five games last season because of a shoulder injury. He has averaged 24 points in his first two Lakers appearances. Two games cannot establish a new normal, but they explain why this particular return has a different feel from an ordinary former-player visit.
Our take: Utah’s third quarter is worth your attention. Eight turnovers and seven fouls in that period nearly spoiled Friday’s win. Against a Lakers group that just received 28 points and nine assists from Reaves, careless possessions could hand the visitors chances before Utah gets its defense organized.
Ask: “Which center is making life easier for the players around him?” That gives you a reason to follow both sides of the reunion. Kessler is listed available with a finger splint in the 11:15 a.m. ET report. The Lakers list Carr and Thiero out; Utah lists Nurkic out.
NBA 11:15 a.m. ET report lists Kessler available with a left finger splint; Cameron Carr and Adou Thiero out for Los Angeles; Jusuf Nurkic out for Utah. Source
