The defending champion Knicks and visiting Magic are both 0-2. Orlando must adjust without Banchero, who is ruled out. Follow Wagner’s decisions, Bane’s catches and Brunson’s supporting cast. McBride just made six threes for New York; tonight’s question is whether the Knicks can turn individual bursts into a steadier team performance.
New York needs its first win after raising a championship banner. Orlando also sits 0-2, but must play without Banchero. Wagner and Carter scored 18 and 20 Friday; Brunson and Towns remain the Knicks’ familiar starting point.
Watch whether Bane receives the ball with space after his 1-for-9 night from three. Orlando’s third quarter also needs repair after a 29-15 deficit in that period Friday. For New York, remember McBride’s six threes off the bench. The Magic additionally list Isaac, Nelson and Penda out, with Black questionable; Alvarado is questionable for New York.
New York’s championship banner is up, but its first win is still missing. Orlando arrives with the same 0-2 record and a more immediate complication: Paolo Banchero is out with an ankle injury. One team is trying to get its title defense moving; the other must reorganize without a central scorer.
Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr. supplied 18 and 20 points for Orlando on Friday. New York’s familiar starting point is Jalen Brunson, with Karl-Anthony Towns alongside him; they scored 19 and 22 in Boston. Follow who creates the first opening and who receives the ball after the defense moves.
Banchero is not Orlando’s only absence. Jonathan Isaac, Izaiyah Nelson and Noah Penda are also out in the 11:15 a.m. ET report; Anthony Black is questionable. New York lists Jose Alvarado questionable. That makes the Magic’s available creators worth watching closely, without assuming any particular replacement starting lineup.
Give Desmond Bane’s next few catches a close look. He went 1-for-9 from three Friday; Wagner also committed six turnovers. Does Orlando deliver the ball while Bane has room to set himself, or leave Wagner to force a pass through traffic? Those details tell you more about the adjustment than whether the first jumper drops.
The Knicks are the first defending champion to open 0-2 since Dallas began 0-3 in 2011-12. It is unusual company, not a forecast. The useful question is whether this team can play a clean stretch tonight before Brunson has to rescue a possession late in the clock.
Our take: stay tuned after halftime. Orlando was outscored 29-15 in Friday’s third quarter; New York’s late rally ended four points short in Boston. Tonight, look for which team can produce several sensible possessions in succession. That is a more meaningful early correction than one spectacular basket after a long dry spell.
Here is a name for the conversation beyond Brunson: Miles McBride. He made six of eight threes for 20 bench points Friday, while Mikal Bridges missed all eight of his shots. Can New York get contributions from more places at once? That question is more revealing than simply asking when the champions will finally win.
Official report: Banchero, Jonathan Isaac, Izaiyah Nelson and Noah Penda out; Anthony Black questionable. New York’s Jose Alvarado questionable. Source
