Chicago keeps firing. Boston gives those shots a harder question.

One game. Four ways in. Choose your read; the full primer adds the stories behind the headlines.

30 SEC

30 seconds

Chicago’s Caleb Wilson scored 30 against Washington despite going 1-for-9 from three. The Bulls are still searching for their outside shot. Against Boston, follow Josh Giddey’s passes and ask whether the receiver gets a balanced, open catch. Tatum brings the scoring attraction; Queta’s three blocks against New York make the Celtics’ help near the rim worth watching too.

Chicago is shooting 22.6 percent from three through three games, yet coach Tiago Splitter wants his players to keep taking open looks. Boston makes this a useful game to watch the difference between a good attempt and a desperate one.

Caleb Wilson just scored 30 with 14 rebounds against Washington despite making one of nine threes. Josh Giddey supplied 10 assists without a turnover. Follow a Giddey pass: can Wilson or another receiver catch, set and decide before a defender arrives?

Boston’s Jayson Tatum had 36 against New York, while reserve center Neemias Queta contributed 15 points and three blocks. Our focus is Chicago’s response after misses: purposeful movement and another useful catch would tell you more than a hot minute alone.

QUICK HITS

FULL PRIMER

The Big Story

Chicago’s shooters have been getting a fairly blunt message from the rim. The Bulls went 12-for-43 from three in Saturday’s loss to Washington and sit at 22.6 percent through three games. Coach Tiago Splitter still wants open shots taken. Boston offers an immediate test of that patience.

The useful viewing question is not simply whether the next three goes in. Watch whether the receiver has time to set his feet, or has to rush because a defender arrives with the ball.

Know These Names

Caleb Wilson is Chicago’s rookie to learn now: 30 points and 14 rebounds against Washington, even while going 1-for-9 from three. Matas Buzelis added 21. Wilson’s evening is a reminder that a scorer can matter in several ways while one part of his game is misfiring.

Boston’s Jayson Tatum answered with 36 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in Friday’s win over New York. Follow him after a pass, too: does Chicago keep track of him, or does another touch become available?

The Plot Thickens

Boston rebounded from its opening loss by beating New York 107–103. Jordan Walsh, a starter in both Celtics games, helped make Jalen Brunson work for 19 points on 7-for-17 shooting.

Find Walsh before the shot. The interesting part can be the effort required just to receive a pass in a useful spot. Whoever draws his attention tonight, that early work gives you something to watch beyond the final contest.

Keep Your Eye On…

Josh Giddey recorded 10 assists without a turnover against Washington. On a Bulls possession, start with his first pass and stay with its recipient. Does Chicago turn that catch into another advantage, or immediately have to start over?

If a drive reaches the basket, locate Boston’s help defender. Neemias Queta blocked three shots against New York. A shooter noticing him and passing out is worth observing too; a block is only the most obvious ending.

Did You Know?

Queta’s New York contribution took only 22 minutes: 15 points, six rebounds and three blocks. He now comes off the bench behind offseason addition Mitchell Robinson. Boston’s first substitution at center is worth paying attention to, even if Tatum remains the biggest name on screen.

The FanFluent Take

Wilson’s 1-for-9 three-point line is easy to remember. So are the nine free throws he made and four offensive rebounds he grabbed. We would judge his response to misses by whether he stays involved in those other parts of the game.

For Chicago as a team, a contested miss and an open miss should not be the same story. Better catches would be encouraging even before the percentage improves; difficult shots going in would be a less reassuring shortcut.

Conversation Fuel

Try this: Chicago’s rookie scored 30 while making only one of nine threes. That opens a better conversation than just saying the Bulls cannot shoot.

Then keep an eye on Boston’s bench: Queta had 15 points and three blocks in 22 minutes against the Knicks. Who changes the game while the headline scorers are taking a breath?
