Houston won Saturday’s meeting 121–114; Atlanta gets the rematch immediately. Jalen Johnson supplied 16 assists, but the Hawks missed 36 of 49 threes. Follow his next pass: does the receiver get a balanced shot or rush it? Houston’s Reed Sheppard made five threes in a spot start, though VanVleet’s possible return means that role is not guaranteed again.
The Hawks and Rockets just played, and the unfinished viewing question is right there in the box score: Jalen Johnson had 16 assists while Atlanta went 13-for-49 from three. Houston won 121–114 and arrives home 3–0.
Follow Johnson’s passes to the receiver’s feet. Is Atlanta creating a balanced catch, or asking someone to shoot with a defender already arriving? At Houston’s end, watch Alperen Sengun, whose seven assists Saturday make him worth following before the shot.
Reed Sheppard hit five threes in a spot start while Fred VanVleet rested. VanVleet was absent from Monday’s reviewed injury report, so do not assume the same lineup. Our interest is how each team handles the next receiver now that it has just seen this opponent.
Reed Sheppard hit five threes in a spot start Saturday. With VanVleet’s status changing, watch Sheppard’s touches without assuming the same starting role.
Atlanta does not have to wait long to revisit Saturday’s near-comeback. Houston won 121–114 after leading by 20; the Hawks got within five in the final minute. Now the same teams meet in Houston, with the Rockets 3–0.
The rematch offers a simple advantage for the viewer: you already have a question to test. Can Atlanta turn its passing into cleaner catches and made shots before it needs another late rescue?
Jalen Johnson did a little of nearly everything for Atlanta: 26 points, 16 assists and nine rebounds. A forward creating that many baskets is worth following before he reaches scoring range. Watch which defender steps toward him and which teammate becomes available.
Houston’s Alperen Sengun offers another passing focal point, with seven assists alongside 17 points and 10 rebounds Saturday. Kevin Durant scored 22, but the route the ball takes to a scorer can be the most revealing part of the possession.
Reed Sheppard made his opportunity count while Fred VanVleet rested Saturday: 19 points, seven assists and five threes in a spot start. The Monday preview notes VanVleet did not appear on Houston’s injury report. That is a reason to leave the next starting lineup open, not pencil Sheppard into the same job.
When Sheppard gets a touch, notice whether Atlanta closes toward his shot early and whether he can move the ball to the space that opens.
Atlanta missed 36 of its 49 threes Saturday. CJ McCollum and Nickeil Alexander-Walker combined to go 5-for-17. The total identifies a problem; it does not tell us that every attempt was a bad decision.
On the next Johnson pass to the perimeter, watch the receiver’s feet and the approaching defender. Is there time for a balanced shot? Does an extra pass find a better one? That is a more useful conversation than calling every miss a failure of effort.
Amen Thompson’s Saturday line included 17 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, with a perfect nine makes at the foul line. Tari Eason added 19 from the bench. Houston’s win supplied several contributors to notice when Durant is not the one finishing the play.
The Rockets also got 11 points in 20 minutes from Bogdan Bogdanovic, including three threes. That is another example of Saturday’s scoring reaching beyond the most familiar names.
Our focus in this rematch is the next receiver. If Atlanta crowds one Houston creator, does the teammate who catches the outlet keep the advantage alive? At the other end, can Johnson’s teammates reward the chances he creates? Those linked questions make this more than a replay of the final score.
Try this one: Johnson had 16 assists in a game Atlanta still lost. That is a pretty good invitation to discuss the shots at the end of those passes.
For Houston, remember Sheppard’s five threes in a spot start. Watch how Atlanta reacts to his next catch, even if his role changes with VanVleet back in the picture.
October 26, 11:45 a.m. ET NBA report: Houston lists Steven Adams, Quadir Copeland and Julian Phillips out; Marcus Smart questionable. Atlanta lists Mouhamed Gueye and Henri Veesaar out; RayJ Dennis, Keshon Gilbert and Jalen Wilson doubtful; Jock Landale available. VanVleet’s Saturday rest is not a Monday absence designation. Starting roles and minutes are unconfirmed. Source
