Philadelphia is 3-1, but its first loss came with Embiid and Edgecombe sitting out. Both are expected back; Indiana’s Haliburton and Nembhard are questionable, with Zubac out. Watch the first pass when Embiid draws help: can Philadelphia’s famous names make one another’s shots easier? Indiana’s available playmakers will shape the other half of the story.
Philadelphia’s first loss exposed a different version of its offense: Embiid and Edgecombe watched while Maxey scored 29 in a 106-93 defeat to Detroit. Both absent players are expected to return, although minutes are not guaranteed.
Embiid’s previous game included ten assists. With LeBron James and Jaylen Brown also on this roster, watch whether Philadelphia turns defensive attention into quick, useful passes instead of taking turns attacking.
Indiana is 2-2 after losing at Milwaukee. Haliburton and Nembhard are questionable; Zubac and McConnell are out in the 12:15 p.m. ET report. Siakam’s six assists Monday suggest another player to follow as the Pacers work around their uncertainty. Who makes the next teammate’s job easier?
Philadelphia has already tried winning without Joel Embiid and VJ Edgecombe; Sunday’s 106-93 loss to Detroit was its first defeat. Their expected return gives this 3-1 team a different problem to solve: making all that talent useful on the same possession. Indiana, at 2-2, has a more immediate question about who can organize its attack.
That contrast makes this more interesting than a collection of famous names. Watch which team makes its next pass easier for the person receiving it.
Embiid’s last appearance produced 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Milwaukee. That last number matters: he can be the destination of a possession or the person who redirects it. Tyrese Maxey supplied 29 against Detroit, so Philadelphia has just seen both versions of where the offense can begin.
Across the floor, Pascal Siakam had 20 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in Monday’s loss. Keep him in view even when someone else has the ball.
Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard are questionable in the 12:15 p.m. ET report; Ivica Zubac and T.J. McConnell are out. Those are distinct uncertainties at ball handler and center. Philadelphia’s Embiid and Edgecombe are not listed, but that is no promise about minutes. The expanded availability note carries the rest of the report.
If Indiana’s primary creators cannot play, the same playbook may demand very different decisions from the players asked to run it.
Watch the first pass out of an Embiid catch if he plays. A double-team means two defenders commit to one scorer; the payoff comes when the ball reaches the teammate they left. Does Philadelphia find that teammate immediately, or let Indiana recover?
At the other end, follow Siakam after he gives the ball up. His six assists Monday make him worth watching as a connector, not merely the person finishing a shot.
Philadelphia lost despite Maxey’s 29 on Sunday. Indiana lost despite Haliburton’s 22 points and nine assists Monday. Both teams arrive with a recent example of a good individual night failing to solve a team problem.
That is a useful antidote to watching only the leading scorer. The less obvious story is whether the supporting possessions still produce a usable shot when the first option is crowded.
Philadelphia’s interesting test is generosity. With LeBron James and Jaylen Brown now alongside Maxey and Embiid, the hard part may be deciding when a good scorer should become the passer. The names and arrivals are verified; how quickly that partnership fits is tonight’s question.
For Indiana, judge the choices against the lineup actually available. A missing creator changes the assignment, not just the list of names on the screen.
Try this: “If Embiid draws two defenders, who should get the next touch?” It turns a star-watching exercise into a conversation about how Philadelphia wants to play. His recent ten-assist game gives the question a real starting point.
Or ask: “How much should we learn from Indiana tonight if both questionable guards sit?” Decide what would count as progress before the final score makes the argument for you.
October 28, 12:15 p.m. ET NBA report: Philadelphia lists Dominick Barlow, Tacko Fall, Ariel Hukporti and Jabari Walker out. Indiana lists Tyrese Haliburton and Andrew Nembhard questionable; Aaron Nesmith, Obi Toppin, Kobe Brown, Jalen Slawson and Braden Smith probable; Johnny Furphy, T.J. McConnell, Ben Sheppard and Ivica Zubac out. Embiid and Edgecombe are not listed, which does not guarantee minutes or a starting role. Source
