The Knicks and Bulls are both 1-3, but New York just earned its first win while Chicago lost by 35 in Boston. Bridges finally found his three-point shot; the Bulls gave the ball away 25 times. Watch whether New York’s recovery travels, and whether Chicago can finish possessions with shots. New York lists Alvarado out.
New York finally has something to build on: a 111-97 win over Detroit, with Towns contributing 27 points and 20 rebounds. Now comes an immediate road test on the second night of a back-to-back.
Chicago is also 1-3 after a 134-99 loss in Boston. Its 25 turnovers are a more useful viewing clue than simply hoping more shots go in: watch how the Bulls respond when their first action is stopped.
Bridges made four threes Tuesday after missing his first ten attempts of the season. Were the looks better, or did the results finally catch up? New York lists Alvarado out in the 3:15 p.m. ET report; Tuesday’s minutes are not a promise for tonight.
The defending champions finally have a win. New York beat Detroit 111-97 Tuesday after losing its first three games, then immediately faced a new assignment: take that response to Chicago. The Bulls also sit at 1-3, but arrive from a 35-point loss in Boston. Same record, very different last conversation in the locker room.
One team wants proof that its recovery can last longer than a night. The other needs to stop a bad stretch from swallowing the game.
Karl-Anthony Towns supplied 27 points and 20 rebounds against Detroit; Jalen Brunson added 23. Towns gives you a particularly useful second place to look after a shot goes up: does he end the possession or create another one?
For Chicago, Norman Powell scored 20 and Caleb Wilson 17 in Boston. Those scoring totals identify people to follow, but the bigger question is whether their teammates can deliver the ball before the defense is set.
New York lists Jose Alvarado out in the 3:15 p.m. ET report. Chicago lists Nic Claxton out and Patrick Williams and Tobe Awaka questionable. The Knicks are also on the second night of a back-to-back, so Tuesday’s contributors are context, not a promise of identical roles or minutes.
Keep the two questions separate. Who is available is a reporting question; how New York carries Tuesday’s better habits into this game is the basketball question.
Watch what happens after Chicago’s first action is denied. A reset pass can look dull, but it is much better than gifting the opponent a run at an unprotected basket. The Bulls committed 25 turnovers in Boston, so a patient second attempt is something concrete to notice.
When New York has the ball, watch the spacing around Towns. Can his teammates make a defender hesitate between helping inside and staying close enough to contest a shot?
Mikal Bridges went 0-for-10 from three across New York’s first three games, then hit four of eight against Detroit. That is a sharp reminder of how quickly a tiny October sample can change.
The useful follow-up is about the looks, not a forecast of another four makes. If he plays, is Bridges catching the ball ready to shoot, or being asked to manufacture something after the possession has stalled?
New York’s win should buy patience, not a declaration that everything is fixed. A title defense does not become convincing because one night finally feels familiar. Chicago offers a chance to show the less glamorous part of recovery: repeat the decisions when the setting and fatigue change.
For the Bulls, fewer possessions thrown away would be meaningful even before the shooting improves. Make New York defend an actual attempt.
“Was Bridges’s breakout about better shots, or simply shots finally falling?” His four makes after an 0-for-10 start make both answers worth arguing. Watch the catches before judging the result.
For Chicago: “Would you take an ordinary shooting night with far fewer turnovers over one hot quarter?” Monday’s 25 giveaways are the reason that trade-off deserves a real answer.
October 28, 3:15 p.m. ET NBA report: New York lists Jose Alvarado out. Chicago lists Nic Claxton out, and Tobe Awaka and Patrick Williams questionable. Tuesday’s Knicks participants are not guaranteed a particular role or minutes Wednesday. Source
