30 seconds

San Antonio scored 80 in Tuesday’s first half, powered by eight Champagnie threes. At Utah, watch whether the 35-assist passing game travels even if the shooting cools. George and Bamba supplied the Jazz’s latest resistance, but Jackson and Nurkic are out, Markkanen is questionable, and Harris and Quaintance are out for San Antonio. Availability remains part of the matchup.

San Antonio reached 2-2 with a 130-103 win over Sacramento. Champagnie hit eight threes before halftime; Wembanyama finished with 29 points, ten rebounds and five blocks. The Spurs’ 35 assists may be the most useful clue for tonight: watch the pass after Utah rushes toward a shooter.

Utah is 1-3 after losing by five to Memphis. George scored 26 and Bamba supplied 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks off the bench.

The frontcourt picture is unsettled: Jackson and Nurkic are out, Markkanen and Hayes questionable, and San Antonio lists Harris and Quaintance out. Tuesday’s performances are context, not lineup guarantees. Can the Spurs repeat the decisions without needing to repeat an extraordinary shooting half?

QUICK HITS

FULL PRIMER

The Big Story

San Antonio’s first half against Sacramento produced 80 points and eight Julian Champagnie threes. That is a wonderful night to have—and a dangerous night to expect on demand. The 2-2 Spurs now travel to face a 1-3 Utah team whose frontcourt availability is a major part of the matchup.

The repeatable part may be the passing that created those shots. Tonight gives you a chance to separate the process from the fireworks.

Know These Names

Victor Wembanyama supplied 29 points, ten rebounds and five blocks against the Kings, making 14 of 21 shots. Champagnie supplied the eruption from distance, finishing with 26 points. Watch how much attention each attracts before a teammate makes the next move.

Utah’s Keyonte George scored 26 against Memphis. Mo Bamba added 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks off the bench, giving you another name to track when the Jazz need a possession to change direction.

The Plot Thickens

Utah lists Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jusuf Nurkic out, with Lauri Markkanen and Jaxson Hayes questionable in the 3:15 p.m. ET report. That leaves important questions about the frontcourt. San Antonio lists Tobias Harris and Jayden Quaintance out on this second night of a back-to-back.

Tuesday’s box score tells us what the Spurs just did. It does not certify how long anyone will play tonight.

Keep Your Eye On…

Watch the extra pass after Utah closes toward a shooter. A closeout is the defender’s rush to contest; the next decision can turn that rush into an opening somewhere else. San Antonio’s 35 assists against Sacramento give this viewing cue a concrete foundation.

Then switch your attention to George. If Wembanyama plays, can Utah make the defense move before asking George to finish near the rim? The timing of the attack may be as revealing as the shot.

Did You Know?

Champagnie’s entire 24-point first half came from eight threes. San Antonio still finished with 35 assists against 13 turnovers, including eight assists from Devin Vassell and six from Dylan Harper. The hot hand was visible; the delivery system deserves a second look.

You do not need another eight-threes half to recognize good offense. Watch whether the ball still reaches the shooter before the defense arrives.

The FanFluent Take

The Spurs should leave this game happier with another night of decisive passing than with an imitation of Tuesday’s shooting spree. A hot streak can end; recognizing an open teammate remains a choice.

For Utah, Bamba’s four-block outing offers a reason to watch beyond the absences. It does not establish his role tonight, but it raises a worthwhile question: can a supporting player change several possessions without becoming the centerpiece of every one?

Conversation Fuel

“How much of Champagnie’s huge half belonged to the passer?” Eight first-half threes and 35 team assists give both the shooter and the people finding him a strong case.

For Utah: “What would count as a good defensive night against Wembanyama—fewer points, or making everyone else work harder?” Start with that question if he is available, and let the possessions complicate the answer.
