Flagg brings 29 points, 11 assists and five steals from Dallas’s latest win into a meeting with 4-0 Oklahoma City. The Thunder are missing Williams, Wallace, Holmgren and Caruso; Mitchell is questionable after scoring 30. Irving is questionable for Dallas. Watch the decisions after a second defender commits—and who can keep the advantage alive.
Dallas’s latest win featured a full Flagg performance: 29 points, 11 assists and five steals against Miami. Now the 2-2 Mavericks host unbeaten Oklahoma City. Watch whether his passing creates a shot before the defense can recover, rather than simply counting his own attempts.
The Thunder beat Phoenix with 30 from Mitchell, 26 from Gilgeous-Alexander and 18 from McCain. Hartenstein and Mara each recorded a points-rebounds double-double.
But Mitchell is questionable, while Jalen Williams, Wallace, Holmgren and Caruso are out. Dallas has Irving questionable too. Monday’s box scores are clues, not tonight’s promised rotation. The best question may be who keeps an offense moving after its headline player gives up the ball.
Cooper Flagg just gave Dallas 29 points, 11 assists and five steals in a win over Miami. His next opponent is unbeaten Oklahoma City—but the Thunder’s injury list makes this a different test from the one the standings might suggest. Dallas is 2-2; Oklahoma City is 4-0 and trying to keep winning with several major contributors out.
Can Flagg make the right choice repeatedly when the defense, and the people operating it, keep changing?
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 26 against Phoenix, but Ajay Mitchell led the Thunder with 30 and Jared McCain added 18. Those supporting contributions are central to understanding how Oklahoma City won its latest game.
Flagg’s 11 assists are the other number to keep in mind. Watch when he releases the ball: before a second defender arrives, after drawing that defender, or after the passing window has already started to close?
Mitchell is questionable with a right ankle sprain in the 3:15 p.m. ET report. Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Chet Holmgren and Alex Caruso are out. So the player who just supplied 30 points is himself an uncertainty, not an automatic solution.
Dallas has Kyrie Irving and Caleb Martin questionable, with Naji Marshall doubtful. Santi Aldama and Tarik Biberovic are out, among other absences. Any discussion of Flagg’s workload needs that qualifier; the available help is not yet settled.
When Flagg draws a second defender, follow the teammate he finds rather than the ball’s return to Flagg. Does that teammate attack an opening, make one more pass, or pause long enough for Oklahoma City to recover? His recent assists make this a practical way to watch the game.
For the Thunder, look at the possession after Gilgeous-Alexander gives up the ball. The next player’s decision can either preserve the advantage or force him to start again.
Oklahoma City’s supporting big men gave it different forms of help against Phoenix: Isaiah Hartenstein had 15 points and 13 rebounds, while Aday Mara had 11 and ten. A depleted team still found production in more than one place.
That does not tell us tonight’s rotation. It tells us where to look for the less celebrated possessions: a catch near the basket, a rebound secured, an extra chance that keeps the main scorer from having to do everything.
The unbeaten record is impressive, but the more revealing question is how much of Oklahoma City’s offense survives without its usual personnel. Another win would matter; so would seeing unfamiliar combinations make familiar, useful decisions.
Dallas should view Flagg’s passing as part of the threat rather than a consolation when he cannot score. Eleven assists against Miami create a strong starting point for that argument, even with a different defense waiting.
“Which Flagg number matters most tonight: 29 points, 11 assists or five steals?” Each describes a different way he changed the Miami game. Pick one before tipoff, then watch whether Oklahoma City makes you reconsider.
The Thunder version: “Who has the hardest job after Shai gives up the ball?” Mitchell’s uncertain status makes that question more useful than assuming Monday’s scoring order will repeat.
October 28, 3:15 p.m. ET NBA report: Oklahoma City lists Alex Caruso, Chet Holmgren, Thomas Sorber, Nikola Topic, Cason Wallace and Jalen Williams out; Ajay Mitchell questionable.
