Charlotte won Monday’s meeting, but this rematch has changed. Brandon Miller scored 31 in Wednesday’s loss with limited scoring help; Naz Reid was benched for the second half. Washington now has AJ Dybantsa, who scored 19 in his debut. Watch who helps Miller—and what Dybantsa adds. Advance availability is timestamped below.
Charlotte’s first win over Washington featured a career-high 39 from Brandon Miller and 18 points with 12 rebounds from Naz Reid. Wednesday was different: Miller scored 31 in a 97-89 loss at Detroit, and Reid sat the second half after Charles Lee said his play missed team standards.
Washington has a new variable. AJ Dybantsa, absent Monday, scored 19 on 8-for-12 shooting in his debut; Kyshawn George had 11 assists. The Wizards still lost to Cleveland. Charlotte needs more help for Miller; Washington needs that new connection to matter beyond a promising box score. Check the advance availability snapshot below.
Charlotte already beat Washington this week. The rematch still deserves a fresh look: the Hornets arrive after a loss in which Brandon Miller supplied more than a third of their points, while Washington now has AJ Dybantsa in the mix. He scored 19 in his NBA debut Wednesday. Same jerseys, different problem.
Charlotte is 3-2; Washington is 2-3. Both lost Wednesday, so neither gets to treat the earlier meeting as a reliable script.
Miller put up 31 points and 12 rebounds in Charlotte’s 97-89 loss at Detroit. Naz Reid finished with seven and six in 13 minutes. Those numbers become more revealing together: Miller was carrying the scoring while a teammate who helped beat Washington Monday barely played.
For Washington, watch Dybantsa and Kyshawn George as a pair. Dybantsa made eight of 12 shots in his debut; George delivered 11 assists. Can they turn that promising introduction into easier possessions for each other?
Charles Lee sat Reid for the entire second half in Detroit after saying his first-half play fell short of team standards. Friday offers an immediate response opportunity, but it does not come with a promised role or minutes.
Dybantsa missed Monday’s meeting. His anticipated home debut changes what Charlotte has to prepare for, without erasing Washington’s 121-111 loss to Cleveland in his first outing.
Watch what happens after Washington sends help toward Miller. Does Charlotte get a second useful action, or simply return the ball and ask him to rescue the possession? No other Hornet scored more than 14 in Detroit. That makes this a very specific supporting-cast test.
Availability snapshot — October 29, 11:15 p.m. ET: Charlotte lists Dennis Schroder questionable; Coby White, Grant Williams, Kon Knueppel and Kylan Boswell out. Washington lists Tre Johnson questionable; Justin Champagnie, Tristan Vukcevic and Jamir Watkins out. These are advance designations, not confirmed lineups.
Monday’s 110-103 Charlotte win featured a career-high 39 from Miller, an 18-point, 12-rebound night from Reid, and 29 points with 10 rebounds from Washington’s Anthony Davis. The earlier result was not just Miller beating Washington by himself. Charlotte had a second major contribution to reproduce.
Our take: Charlotte’s most interesting number Friday may belong to somebody other than Miller. Another big scoring night would be welcome; another night with little help would leave the same question unanswered. Reid’s response and the possessions after Miller draws attention will tell us more than a simple points race.
Try this: “Charlotte won the first meeting with Miller and Reid. If Miller has to do it alone this time, is it really the same matchup?”
Or ask the Washington fan: “After that debut, would you rather see Dybantsa take more shots or George keep choosing them?” His efficient 19 and George’s 11 assists make that a real choice, not rookie hype.
