Brunson scored 38 as New York rallied past Chicago; Maxey scored 27 as Philadelphia erased a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit against Indiana. Now they meet in an NBA Cup opener. The Sixers won the first matchup. Watch which team gives its closer control instead of another rescue job. Philadelphia’s reported rest plan remains unsettled.
Two comeback wins set up this NBA Cup rematch. New York outscored Chicago 43-31 in the fourth quarter behind a 38-point night from Jalen Brunson. Philadelphia entered the fourth down 13 against Indiana; Tyrese Maxey finished with 27 and made two late threes.
The Knicks are 2-3 after an 0-3 start; the Sixers are 4-1 and won their opening-night meeting. Brunson’s six threes Wednesday exceeded his total from the first four games. Watch whether either team can make the fourth quarter less dramatic. Philadelphia’s reported James-or-Embiid rest plan is unresolved; use the timestamped availability below.
Jalen Brunson and Tyrese Maxey arrive with fresh evidence that a game is not over when the fourth quarter starts. New York beat Chicago 133-127 Wednesday; Philadelphia came back to beat Indiana 114-109. Friday brings those two closing acts together for an NBA Cup opener—and an opening-night rematch.
The Knicks have won twice after starting 0-3. The Sixers are 4-1. A turnaround and a fast start meet at a useful measuring point.
Brunson’s Chicago line was 38 points and seven assists, including six made threes. Maxey scored 27 against Indiana. These are the guards to follow when a defense has to choose between staying attached and helping somewhere else.
Do not reduce New York’s last win to one man: OG Anunoby added 23, while Karl-Anthony Towns supplied 19 points and 13 rebounds. Those contributions make overcommitting to Brunson a more interesting gamble.
Philadelphia already beat New York by six on opening night. The Knicks therefore bring more than a chance to improve their record: this is an early check on what their two wins have changed.
There is an unresolved personnel wrinkle. The NBA preview reports possible rest for either LeBron James or Joel Embiid across Philadelphia’s Friday-Saturday back-to-back. The Thursday-night official report does not designate either out. Treat the plan as unsettled, not a confirmed absence.
Watch the beginning of the fourth quarter, not just the final shot. New York won that period 43-31 against Chicago. Philadelphia entered it 13 down against Indiana before Maxey hit two threes in the last two minutes. Can either team keep its closer from needing another rescue mission?
Availability snapshot — October 29, 11:15 p.m. ET: New York lists Jose Alvarado out. Philadelphia lists Jaylen Brown questionable; Dominick Barlow, Tacko Fall, Ariel Hukporti and Jabari Walker out. These are advance designations, not confirmed lineups.
Brunson hit six threes Wednesday after making only four across the first four games. He went 6-for-10 against Chicago after that combined 4-for-20 start. One hot night does not settle his shooting season, but it changes the immediate decision for a defender tempted to give him space.
Our take: the better sign Friday would be a closer who does not need a comeback. Brunson and Maxey have already shown the dramatic version this week. A team that gives its lead guard a manageable fourth quarter would be showing something less spectacular—and potentially more repeatable.
“Both teams just pulled off a fourth-quarter comeback. Which one would you trust more with a lead?” That turns the highlight conversation into a question about control.
For the Knicks fan: “Did Brunson’s six threes solve something, or did they buy New York time to solve it?” His first four games and Wednesday give you two very different samples.
