Miami ended its 0-4 start in Atlanta and now seeks its first home win. Indiana is missing Haliburton, McConnell and Zubac; probable Andrew Nembhard just delivered 18 points and 14 assists in a loss. Watch Indiana’s late possessions and Miami’s chance to build on the breakthrough. Bam Adebayo arrives as the Heat’s new career rebounding leader.
Miami finally broke through, beating Atlanta 129-117 behind a 24-point, nine-rebound night from Bam Adebayo. He also passed Udonis Haslem for the franchise rebounding record. The Heat are 1-4 and still winless at home entering this NBA Cup matchup.
Indiana’s problem is who runs the offense. Haliburton and McConnell are out, as is Zubac. Andrew Nembhard is probable after recording 18 points and 14 assists against Philadelphia. The Pacers led that game by 13 entering the fourth and lost. If Nembhard plays, watch whether his creation holds up when possessions become harder. Advance availability appears below.
Miami finally has a win to build on. Indiana has a playmaking job to redistribute. The Heat beat Atlanta 129-117 Wednesday after four straight losses; the Pacers arrive without Tyrese Haliburton and T.J. McConnell on the advance injury report. That makes Friday more than a meeting between two teams below.500.
Can Miami turn relief into a second result? Can Indiana create enough good possessions without two of its familiar organizers?
Andrew Nembhard offered a credible answer Wednesday: 18 points and 14 assists against Philadelphia. He is probable for Friday, so his participation still needs confirmation. If he plays, follow the pass after he draws a second defender as closely as his own shot.
Bam Adebayo had 24 points and nine rebounds in Miami’s breakthrough. He and Giannis Antetokounmpo give this matchup two prominent Miami names to track around the paint. Indiana’s absent center Ivica Zubac adds weight to those possessions.
The Heat are still seeking their first home win after an 0-3 start in Miami. Friday also opens their NBA Cup East Group B schedule. One road win changed the mood available to them; it did not fix the home record.
Indiana has lost three of four, including a particularly frustrating Wednesday: it led Philadelphia by 13 entering the fourth and lost 114-109. Creating a lead and protecting it are separate jobs.
If Nembhard plays, watch whether Miami makes him finish possessions or lets him distribute them. His 14-assist night is the reason that choice matters. For Indiana, help toward Miami’s interior scorers creates the next question: who is left to recover to the pass? These are the decisions worth following beyond the score.
Availability snapshot — October 29, 11:15 p.m. ET: Indiana lists Tyrese Haliburton, T.J. McConnell, Ivica Zubac, Johnny Furphy and Ben Sheppard out; Andrew Nembhard and Aaron Nesmith probable. Miami lists Simone Fontecchio questionable. Probable is not a confirmed lineup.
Adebayo’s Wednesday came with a franchise record: he reached 5,794 career rebounds for Miami, passing Udonis Haslem’s 5,791. The milestone arrived in the Heat’s first win of the season. Friday offers a home audience its next look at the franchise’s new rebounding leader.
Our take: Indiana’s test is not whether it can produce one impressive passing line. Nembhard already did that in a loss. It is whether the available group can keep producing sensible possessions when the game tightens. Miami, meanwhile, gets a chance to make its first win the beginning of something rather than an isolated good night.
“Nembhard had 14 assists and Indiana still lost. Is the bigger concern creating the lead or surviving the fourth quarter?” The Philadelphia game supplies both sides of that argument.
For Miami: “What would convince you the Atlanta win changed something—another big scoring night, or finally winning at home?” Friday gives the Heat a chance at both.
