The unbeaten Rockets get a second meeting with Dallas after winning the opener 128-110. Houston routed Milwaukee Wednesday with six double-figure scorers, led by Fred VanVleet’s 24. It did that without Sengun, Smart and Adams; the first two are questionable Friday and Adams is out.

Dallas has fresh reasons for optimism after beating Oklahoma City 120-96. Cooper Flagg recorded 26 points, eight assists and no turnovers, while Kyrie Irving had 15 points and four assists in his first home game since March 2025. Watch whether Dallas can keep that decision-making clean when Houston offers more than one problem to solve.

FULL PRIMER

The Big Story

Houston won the opener between these teams by 18. Nine days later, Dallas gets another look at a Rockets team that still has not lost. The records are 5-0 and 3-2, but both arrive from emphatic Wednesday wins: Houston 132-100 over Milwaukee, Dallas 120-96 over Oklahoma City.

The useful rematch question is not whether Dallas remembers the first result. It is what Dallas can do differently with the ball this time.

Know These Names

Cooper Flagg supplied a striking answer against Oklahoma City: 26 points, eight assists and no turnovers in 33 minutes. The zero belongs in the conversation with the scoring. If Houston makes him handle difficult possessions, can he keep creating without donating extra chances?

Fred VanVleet scored a season-high 24 against Milwaukee, including 15 consecutive Houston points in the third quarter. The Rockets have a guard coming off a burst capable of changing the feel of a game by himself.

The Plot Thickens

Kyrie Irving’s Wednesday was his first home appearance since March 3, 2025. He finished with 15 points and four assists. For Dallas, the interest Friday is how Irving and Flagg share the hard decisions—not simply whether both can put points next to their names.

Houston’s last win came without Alperen Sengun, Marcus Smart and Steven Adams. Six Rockets still scored in double figures. That is a concrete reason Dallas cannot prepare for only one scoring matchup.

Keep Your Eye On…

Watch whether Houston’s first option has to be its last. Amen Thompson scored 23 on 10-for-16 shooting Wednesday; Kevin Durant reached 18 points on just nine shot attempts. Dallas must make the next scorer work, not celebrate too early after disrupting the first action.

Availability snapshot — October 29, 11:15 p.m. ET: Houston lists Alperen Sengun and Marcus Smart questionable; Steven Adams, Reed Sheppard, Quadir Copeland and Julian Phillips out. Dallas lists Santi Aldama and Tarik Biberovic doubtful, Naji Marshall questionable, Dereck Lively II and Sergio de Larrea out, and Caleb Martin available. These are advance designations.

Did You Know?

Flagg’s eight assists against Oklahoma City came without a single turnover. Meanwhile, P.J. Washington added 18 points and nine rebounds and Zaccharie Risacher had 13 and six. Dallas’s big win had useful contributions around its leading scorer, a better starting point for this rematch than asking Flagg to do everything.

The FanFluent Take

Our take: Houston has earned the benefit of the doubt, but Dallas has earned a more interesting rematch than the opening score suggests. Flagg’s decision-making and Irving’s return to the home floor give the Mavericks something specific to test. The challenge is keeping Houston’s depth from turning one good defensive possession into several bad ones.

Conversation Fuel

“Flagg had eight assists and zero turnovers. Is that more encouraging against Houston than his 26 points?” It is a useful way to move past the highlights.

Then ask: “If Houston wins with another different leading scorer, is that the bigger warning sign?” Six double-figure scorers against Milwaukee give the question some substance.
