New Orleans’s first win came with 32 assists and a career-high 13 from Jeremiah Fears. Atlanta just ended a three-game skid behind Onyeka Okongwu’s 29 points and 12 rebounds. Watch whether the Pelicans keep sharing after the first option is interrupted—and whether Atlanta’s rebounding creates extra possessions. Both teams have a better last game to build on.

Jeremiah Fears put up 22 points, eight rebounds and a career-high 13 assists as New Orleans earned its first win, 132-120 over Sacramento. All 10 Pelicans who played recorded an assist; Zion Williamson matched Fears’s 22 points on 10-for-12 shooting.

Atlanta ended its own three-game losing streak by beating Cleveland 114-111. Onyeka Okongwu had 29 points and 12 rebounds, while Jock Landale grabbed 10 boards in 15 minutes. The Hawks also delivered 34 assists. Watch the next pass when the first action is stopped, and the rebound that decides whether a defensive possession is actually over.

FULL PRIMER

The Big Story

New Orleans finally won, and the most useful explanation may be the ball changing hands. The Pelicans beat Sacramento 132-120 Thursday with 32 assists, including 13 from Jeremiah Fears. Saturday asks whether that first win produced a habit they can repeat.

Atlanta brings its own fresh relief: a 114-111 win over Cleveland ended a three-game losing streak. The Hawks are 3-3; the Pelicans are 1-4. Both have a better last game to build from.

Know These Names

Fears paired his career-high 13 assists with 22 points and eight rebounds. That combination makes the defense’s choice interesting: give him a finish, or send help and trust somebody else to recover to his pass. Neither option is comfortable when the decisions are good.

Onyeka Okongwu supplied 29 points and 12 rebounds in Atlanta’s win. He gives the Hawks an interior name to watch alongside a New Orleans offense that just found useful contributions across its rotation.

The Plot Thickens

The Pelicans’ passing was not limited to their lead creator. All 10 players who appeared against Sacramento recorded an assist. That is a more encouraging detail than simply seeing one player pile up a large total.

Atlanta can offer a similar challenge: the Hawks recorded 34 assists against Cleveland. A good first defensive rotation may therefore be only the beginning of the possession at either end.

Keep Your Eye On…

Follow the rebounds when Atlanta’s reserves enter. Aaron Wiggins delivered 20 points and seven boards against Cleveland; Jock Landale collected 10 rebounds in just 15 minutes. New Orleans will want its improved passing to lead to controlled possessions, not extra work after an opponent’s miss.

Availability — October 31, 11:15 a.m. ET: Atlanta lists Mouhamed Gueye and Henri Veesaar out, Jock Landale available, and RayJ Dennis, Zuby Ejiofor, Keshon Gilbert and Jalen Wilson doubtful. New Orleans lists Yves Missi and Jordan Poole out, with Malik Dia and Jaron Pierre Jr. questionable. These are timestamped designations, not confirmed lineups.

Did You Know?

Zion Williamson matched Fears’s 22 points against Sacramento while making 10 of 12 field-goal attempts. The Pelicans got an efficient finishing night and a major playmaking night in the same win. That is a useful pairing to keep in mind when deciding what should carry over Saturday.

The FanFluent Take

Our take: the interesting test for New Orleans begins when Atlanta interrupts the first option. Does the ball reach a second willing decision-maker, or does everybody wait for Fears to restart the offense? A night when all 10 players contributed an assist gives the Pelicans something specific to try to repeat.

Conversation Fuel

“Was New Orleans’s breakthrough about Fears’s 13 assists, or about every player getting at least one?” You can make a case for the star performance and the shared habit.

For Atlanta: “If the Hawks keep getting boards like Landale’s 10 in 15 minutes, can they make the Pelicans defend the same possession twice?” That is the less glamorous threat to watch.
