Acuff had 34 points and 14 assists in Sacramento’s latest loss. Boozer had 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in Memphis’s latest win. The Kings are 0-5; the Grizzlies are 5-0. Enjoy the rookie matchup, but watch the team possessions around it—Sacramento just shot better than 50 percent and still allowed 132 points.
Two rookies arrive from remarkable games. Darius Acuff Jr. recorded 34 points, 14 assists and six rebounds for Sacramento. Cameron Boozer recorded his first NBA triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists for Memphis. Their teams arrive 0-5 and 5-0, respectively.
Sacramento’s 132-120 loss in New Orleans showed why another huge scoring night may not be enough: the Kings shot 46-for-88, but the Pelicans went 50-for-85. Memphis beat Portland 124-103 with Stewart matching Boozer’s 18 points off the bench. Watch who gets help—and who can finish a defensive possession. Current availability is below.
Darius Acuff Jr. just produced 34 points and 14 assists. Cameron Boozer just recorded a triple-double. One rookie’s team still has not won; the other’s still has not lost. That is a much better reason to watch Sacramento at Memphis than the records alone suggest.
The Kings are 0-5 after losing 132-120 in New Orleans. The Grizzlies are 5-0 after winning 124-103 at Portland. Saturday puts two impressive young creators inside very different team circumstances.
Acuff added six rebounds to his scoring and passing against the Pelicans. He was creating a lot of Sacramento’s offense, but that production could not keep New Orleans below 132. His next big line will matter more if the Kings give it a defensive foundation.
Boozer finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists at Portland. Follow the passes as much as the shot attempts: his last game helped several teammates find productive possessions.
Memphis has already taken this start on the road. After winning its home opener, it won four consecutive away games. Returning home at 5-0 brings a different sort of pressure: the Grizzlies now have an unbeaten record to protect against a team eager to erase a zero.
Sacramento’s problem is not the absence of individual scoring. De’Andre Hunter and Precious Achiuwa each had 24 in New Orleans, with Zach LaVine adding 21 beside Acuff’s 34.
Watch whether Sacramento can interrupt the second scoring option. The Kings made 46 of 88 shots against the Pelicans—more than half—and still allowed New Orleans to make 50 of 85. Another strong offensive night will have limited value if the opponent keeps getting that kind of return.
Availability — October 31, 11:15 a.m. ET: Sacramento lists Ben Simmons, Keegan Murray, Maxime Raynaud, Dylan Cardwell and Sean Pedulla out. Memphis lists Ty Jerome and Scotty Pippen Jr. questionable and Quinten Post doubtful. A questionable designation does not settle participation or minutes.
Boozer’s first NBA triple-double included four makes in five three-point attempts. He did not have to be the lone scoring story: Isaiah Stewart also scored 18 off the bench, and Cedric Coward added 17. Memphis’s rookie highlight came with useful company.
Our take: do not score this matchup as Acuff versus Boozer and stop there. Acuff has already shown he can create a huge night; Boozer has shown he can contribute in several ways to an unbeaten team. The more revealing comparison is what happens around them when the first action fails or the first shot misses.
“Would you rather have the rookie with 34 and 14, or the one with a triple-double and an unbeaten team?” The follow-up matters: how much of that choice is really about their teammates?
For Sacramento: “If making more than half your shots still is not enough, where does the first win have to come from?” Thursday makes defense part of the answer.
