Houston and Oklahoma City both arrive from losses in Dallas. The Rockets allowed 40 fourth-quarter points Friday; the Thunder lost the boards despite 14 rebounds from Hartenstein Wednesday. Watch Houston getting back after misses and OKC finishing defensive possessions. Four prominent Thunder contributors are ruled out; Houston’s Saturday report remained pending at 11:15 a.m. ET.

Dallas ended Houston’s 5-0 start with a 116-111 win Friday, scoring 40 in the fourth quarter and winning fast-break points 28-10. Durant’s 28 points did not solve those defensive problems. Eason’s eight offensive rebounds make the balance between chasing another shot and getting back worth watching.

Oklahoma City lost 120-96 in Dallas Wednesday despite 29 from Ajay Mitchell and 14 rebounds from Hartenstein. Caruso, Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Wallace are ruled out Saturday. Houston’s report was still pending at 11:15 a.m. ET. Watch the possessions before the stars’ shots: getting organized, finding a body and securing the rebound.

QUICK HITS

FULL PRIMER

The Big Story

Dallas just gave both teams an uncomfortable reference point. Oklahoma City lost there 120-96 Wednesday; Houston followed with a 116-111 defeat Friday, its first loss of the season. Saturday puts the two responses on the same floor.

The Rockets are 5-1 and the Thunder 4-1, so this is not a crisis meeting. It is an early look at what happens after good starts stop protecting a team from its most visible problems.

Know These Names

Kevin Durant scored 28 and Jabari Smith Jr. 22 in Houston’s loss. Their offense did not prevent Dallas from scoring 40 in the fourth quarter. That is why the next defensive possession deserves as much attention as the next difficult Durant basket.

For Oklahoma City, Ajay Mitchell scored 29 on 12-for-20 shooting in Dallas, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 21 on 7-for-19. The Thunder found a productive supporting scorer without finding a competitive final score.

The Plot Thickens

Oklahoma City’s current report rules out Alex Caruso, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace, among others. The players available have a substantial share of work to redistribute. This primer does not attach a recovery timeline to those absences.

Houston played Friday without Alperen Sengun and Reed Sheppard, but its Saturday report was still pending at 11:15 a.m. Eastern. Those previous absences should not be presented as confirmed for this game.

Keep Your Eye On…

Watch Houston’s first few steps after a missed shot. Dallas won Friday’s fast-break scoring 28-10, and the Rockets allowed 72 second-half points after holding Dallas to 44 before halftime. This is a specific transition-defense question, not a request for vaguely greater effort.

Availability — October 31, 11:15 a.m. ET: Oklahoma City lists Alex Caruso, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Thomas Sorber and Nikola Topic out. Houston had not yet submitted its report. Friday’s absences for the Rockets are not confirmed Saturday designations.

Did You Know?

Tari Eason grabbed eight offensive rebounds among his 13 boards in Dallas. That creates an interesting tension for Houston: crashing the glass can earn another shot, but somebody still has to protect against the break. Watch the balance rather than assuming every extra rebound attempt is automatically the right choice.

The FanFluent Take

Our take: the first convincing improvement might happen before either star gets a shot. Houston needs to get organized after misses. Oklahoma City needs to finish possessions on the glass; it lost the rebound count 49-43 in Dallas despite 14 from Isaiah Hartenstein. Both teams have a practical repair job that another impressive individual scoring line would not settle.

Conversation Fuel

“Eason had eight offensive rebounds, but Dallas won fast-break points 28-10. How would you balance chasing another shot with getting back?” Houston’s last game makes that a real tradeoff.

For Oklahoma City: “Mitchell scored 29 and Hartenstein grabbed 14 boards. What did those good individual nights still leave unsolved?” Start with the team rebound count and the 24-point margin.
