Portland’s first loss also brought Ja Morant’s hamstring absence. Deni Avdija had 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists with no turnovers against Memphis, offering a possible organizing answer. Utah just lost in overtime despite 31 from Keyonte George; Lauri Markkanen remains questionable. Watch Portland’s next pass and who finishes its defensive rebounds.
Portland is 3-1 and 2-0 on the road, but this trip starts without Ja Morant, who is out with a hamstring strain. Deni Avdija supplied 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists with no turnovers in Thursday’s loss to Memphis. His creation is a useful place to look for an adjustment.
Utah is 1-4 after a 117-111 overtime loss to San Antonio. Keyonte George scored 31; Lauri Markkanen missed that game and remains questionable. Watch the rebound after Donovan Clingan challenges a shot: Portland lost the boards 54-45 despite his five blocks. Current availability is timestamped below.
Portland’s first loss brought a bigger problem than a spoiled record: Ja Morant is out with a hamstring strain. The Trail Blazers reach Utah at 3-1, needing to redistribute possessions as well as respond to Thursday’s 124-103 defeat against Memphis.
Deni Avdija gives you a reason to watch that adjustment closely. Even in the loss, he supplied 24 points, nine rebounds and seven assists without a turnover. The next answer does not necessarily have to come from another guard.
Avdija’s passing makes him more interesting here than a simple request for extra points. If Portland uses him to start possessions, watch whether the ball keeps moving after his first decision. His seven assists against Memphis provide a concrete starting point, not a guarantee of a new role.
For Utah, Keyonte George just scored 31 against San Antonio. Ace Bailey added 19 and Darryn Peterson 18. There are multiple scoring names to follow if the Jazz can keep their possessions connected.
Utah took the Spurs to overtime Wednesday and still lost 117-111. It was a third straight home defeat, leaving the Jazz 1-4 overall. Getting close has not yet translated into collecting wins.
Lauri Markkanen missed that game and remains questionable. His status changes the picture around George, but the primer cannot assume his return. Portland’s missing creator is settled on the current report; Utah’s prominent scoring question is not.
Keep an eye on the rebound after Clingan challenges a shot. He blocked five against Memphis, yet Portland lost the rebounding count 54-45. A good defensive play still needs somebody to finish the possession. With Morant absent, Portland has less room to give away those extra chances.
Availability — October 31, 11:15 a.m. ET: Portland lists Ja Morant, Shaedon Sharpe, Jayson Kent and John Tonje out; Robert Williams III and Chris Youngblood questionable. Utah lists Lauri Markkanen questionable; Jaren Jackson Jr., Jusuf Nurkic, Trey Alexander and Harrison Ingram out. These designations do not confirm starters or minutes.
Portland is unbeaten on the road: a 128-120 win in Sacramento and a 136-129 win over the Lakers. Saturday begins a four-game trip. Those wins are evidence that the Blazers can travel well; Morant’s absence means this trip begins with a different problem to solve.
Our take: judge Portland by the quality of the next pass, not just the identity of the next leading scorer. Avdija’s last outing suggests a useful way to share Morant’s workload. If that produces decent shots while Clingan gets rebounding help, Portland can show a practical response even without reproducing its earlier road scoring totals.
“Avdija had seven assists and no turnovers in a bad loss. Is he Portland’s best starting point without Morant?” That gives the conversation a player and a reason.
For Utah: “After another close home loss, would you rather see more George shots or more help from Bailey and Peterson?” All three scored at least 18 against San Antonio.
