Boston brings a five-game winning streak to 6–1 Houston. The Celtics beat Orlando despite going 12-for-44 from three; the Rockets just got 30 from Jabari Smith Jr. and 24 from Marcus Smart. Watch the next pass when the first shot disappears. Boston’s 11:30 a.m. ET injury report was still pending.
Boston is 5–1 after winning 108–97 in Orlando on Sunday. Jayson Tatum scored 32, including 15 free throws, while Paul George supplied eight assists. Houston is 6–1 after beating Oklahoma City 119–98: Jabari Smith Jr. scored 30, Marcus Smart 24, and Alperen Sengun had 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists.
Both teams recorded 29 assists in their latest games. Watch whether the ball keeps moving when the defense removes an easy option. Boston is on a back-to-back and had not submitted its injury report at 11:30 a.m. ET; Houston listed Adams out and Capela and Sheppard questionable.
Boston found a way to win while missing 32 of its 44 three-point attempts in Orlando. Houston’s last win included seven made threes from Marcus Smart and six from Jabari Smith Jr. Two strong starts meet with very different recent shooting experiences.
The Celtics are 5–1 after five straight wins. Houston is 6–1 and unbeaten in three home games. Boston also has the shorter turnaround, coming directly from Sunday’s 108–97 win over the Magic.
Jayson Tatum scored 32 against Orlando, with 15 of those points coming at the free-throw line. Paul George added 17 points and eight assists, plus two steals and two blocks. Boston did not need every jumper to fall to find productive possessions.
Houston just got 30 points from Jabari Smith Jr. and 24 from Marcus Smart against Oklahoma City. Smart made seven of 10 threes; Smith made six of 12. Follow those two when the ball leaves the primary creator’s hands.
This is Boston’s second game in two nights, and its November 2 injury report had not yet been submitted at 11:30 a.m. ET. Do not turn that blank into an assumed lineup. Houston listed Steven Adams out, with Clint Capela and Reed Sheppard questionable.
The uncertainty makes it more useful to watch the actual opening groups than to build the whole game around an expected combination. The recent performances explain why the matchup is appealing; they do not guarantee who will reproduce them tonight.
Watch the extra pass when a defender closes out on a shooter. Houston’s last game produced 29 assists and only 10 turnovers. Boston also had 29 assists, with 12 turnovers, in its win over Orlando. Both recent results offer examples of offense that kept moving.
The question is whether that movement survives against the next opponent. A made contested jumper can hide a stalled possession; a pass that forces another defensive decision is a different kind of progress.
Alperen Sengun finished the Oklahoma City game with 16 points, nine rebounds and nine assists. Kevin Durant scored 14. Houston won 119–98 with Smith and Smart carrying much of the scoring and Sengun helping connect the pieces.
That makes the Rockets interesting beyond a list of famous names. If Boston takes away an initial option, watch who becomes the next person with a useful decision to make.
Boston’s last win is evidence that it can endure a poor night from three. Houston’s is evidence that its scoring can come from several directions. Neither result guarantees the next one.
Our favorite early clue is how each team handles a possession that does not produce its preferred shot. Does Tatum’s pressure create another route to points? Does Houston keep involving the next player? That is a better comparison than waiting to see whose opening jumpers fall.
The conversation starter: what impressed you more last time—Boston winning after going 12-for-44 from three, or Houston getting 54 points from Smith and Smart?
Keep Sengun’s near-triple-double in the discussion too. A 16-point night can be central to a comfortable win when it comes with nine rebounds and nine assists.
