Luka Doncic just scored 40 in a road win. Portland has already beaten the Lakers in Los Angeles. Those two facts make this rematch more interesting than a simple wait for the next big scoring total.
The Lakers are 7–2 after a 116–103 win in Sacramento. Portland is 6–1, including 5–0 away, and won the first meeting 136–129 on October 27.
Doncic paired his 40 points with nine rebounds, seven assists and six made threes against the Kings. Austin Reaves added 21 points and four assists without a turnover.
Portland’s win in Phoenix featured 25 from Damian Lillard, 24 points and 11 rebounds from Donovan Clingan, and 21 points with 12 assists from Deni Avdija. There are several productive touches worth following.
Portland lists Morant, Sharpe and Krejci out on the 3 p.m. ET report. The players who produced in Phoenix will again be part of the conversation about how the available group shares responsibility.
Los Angeles lists Kessler available and Mamukelashvili questionable, with Carr and Bronny James out on G League assignments. Kessler’s current designation matters when considering the work around Clingan and the basket.
Follow Avdija’s pass as carefully as his drive. His 12 assists were part of Portland’s 29 in Phoenix. At the other end, Doncic’s seven assists in Sacramento show that scoring is only one way his possession can end well.
Watch the receiving player’s feet and timing. Does the pass produce a comfortable decision, or does it merely hand off a difficult one?
Jrue Holiday’s 15 points in Phoenix all came from five made threes. Clingan made nine of 12 shots overall. Portland had productive scoring both far from the basket and near it.
That contrast is a useful viewing guide: when the Lakers protect one area, look for whether the other becomes easier to access.
Portland won the boards 47–39 in Phoenix. Kessler had eight rebounds and four blocks in Sacramento. The work around the rim may determine how much either offense gets to run after a stop.
Our focus is whether the Lakers can make Portland’s second option uncomfortable while still handling the first. Doncic can supply an extraordinary stretch without making every defensive problem disappear.
Which Portland contribution worries you more: Avdija’s 12 assists or Clingan’s 24 points on 12 shots? They may be related parts of the same problem for a defense.
For Los Angeles, keep following the play after Doncic passes. Reaves’ turnover-free 21-point game is a reminder that the next decision deserves its own attention.
At 3 p.m. ET November 6, Portland lists Ja Morant, Shaedon Sharpe and Vit Krejci out. Los Angeles lists Kessler available and Sandro Mamukelashvili questionable; Cameron Carr and Bronny James are out on G League assignments. Source
